Documenting our Heritage

St Kevin’s

Boarded Up

Every window is boarded.

The structure is totally abandoned.

Red Brick

The former asylum has a commanding view over the river Lee and beyond.

The river was sadly the cause of a number of patient drownings over the years.

Graffiti Kitchen

The extension to the rear of the building houses a kitchen.

The Visitors Lounge.

We enter the building through an open door which leads to the former visitors lounge.

The walls peel, already we get an overwhelming sense of gloom.

Sullen Shadows

The interior of the building is incredibly dark.

We photograph where sufficient light allows.

Clinic of the Insane

St Kevin’s operated as part of the Cork County Mental Asylum from 1893.

Locked Up

Some of the asylum operated as a secure unit.

Former padded cells and secure areas can be found throughout the building.
