Abandoned ireland

Documenting our Heritage

Fort Camden

(Fort Meagher), Crosshaven, Cork

page 1

Fort Camden

The land ward side of the fort is covered with undergrowth.

A deep ditch circles the fort. This is a hugely impressive defensive structure.

Guards Watch

Inside the guard house, the floor is rotten and falling. The fire place to the left is rusting and crumbling. Straight ahead we see the musket holes facing out on to the entrance bridge.

The Entrance

The road to the fort leads to a fortified entrance.

Entry Point

The entrance bridge leads over the massive defensive ditch.

The windows to the right hand side hold gun positions.

The Guard house

Just through the entrance the guard house looms abandoned and decaying.

It is quite amazing (but not surprising) that this structure which is generally acknowledged as the finest example of

classical coast artillery in the WORLD is left abandoned and falling into ruin.
