Lough Cutra Castle,
Co. Galway
Page 5
The castle has a derelict wing, I can’t help poking my head in to have a quick look!
We walk on through the farmyard and stables, and come up to an impressive kitchen garden.
This is the full extent of the original walled garden.
Imagine this huge area filled with vegetables and fruit trees!
All estates of this period were designed to be completely self sufficient.
We walk on through the castle grounds.
The first courtyard has been converted into comfortable accommodation.
It’s been great having a look around Lough Cutra Castle.
It’s a magnificent location and just fantastic to see a fine Irish demesne still in it’s original form.
Many thanks to Edward Somerville for showing me round and the castle owner for allowing me access to their fine property.
Lough Cutra is a real treasure and I highly recommend it for a wedding or other special event.
Just as we’re packing up and heading out Edward warns me to take care on the roads out of the estate -
‘It’s nearly feeding time’
Lough Cutra operates game shoots and appears to have the largest pheasant population I’ve ever seen!
I stop for this photograph on my way out, I started circling all the pheasants but lost count at about 50 birds!
For anybody considering a shoot, I’d advise taking plenty of ammunition!
