Documenting our Heritage
Hazelbrook House, Ballygar, Roscommon.
Hazelbrook House was built by the Roper family in the late 1700s. By the mid 1850s William Roper held land at Dunmore and Tuam, County Galway, amounting to over 400 acres and also at Athlone, County Roscommon. By the 1870s the Ropers owned 853 acres in county Roscommon and they also had smaller acreages in counties Tipperary and Westmeath.
In 1883 the Ropers sold the Hazelbrook estate to Tom Gilligan. Tom was an Irishman who had previously emigrated to America, made his fortune and then returned to Ireland.
