A trapdoor covered the hole. With the trapdoor raised attackers raiding the castle would have found access very difficult.

The trap door is long gone so I’m faced with a pretty tricky climb across!

This is one curious looking castle.

I’ve never seen anything remotely similar.

This thing has been standing for nearly 800 years.

The walls are massive, 2.5 metres thick at their base.

You can just see the hidden stairs to the second floor contained inside the wall here.

I head up to the second floor....
