Built on the site of a much earlier structure by the Carey family in the early 1800s. The Careys were schoolmasters in the Clonmel area. Dr John Carey emigrated from Ireland to Australia in the 1840s and Glenabbey came into the possession of Colonel Nuttall Greene.

Around the time of the Great Famine, Colonel Greene became bankrupt and his property was sold off in the Incumbered Estates Court. Glenabbey later fell into total dereliction.

Glenabbey Castle is otherwise known as Carey's Castle. The site is located in Coilte forestry and is freely open to the public.
