Documenting our Heritage
Donadea Castle,
Kildare.
Page 2
Curiously a drain pipe protrudes from one of the top windows ?
St Peter’s Church stands on the edge of the Demesne.
The church was rebuilt in 1813 with the aid of a loan of £1000 from the Board of First Fruits.
The Aylmer mausoleum is attached to the rear of the Church.
Just to the side of St Peter’s Church, we find the remains of the gas works.
The circular track of the gas bellows can be found in the grass close to the ruin.
The remains of a much earlier church can be found in the trees to the rear of St Peters.
The Aylmer mausoleum
Top row, second left, reads:
Caroline Maria Aylmer
Died
May 13th 1935
Caroline was the last of the Aylmers to live at Donadea. She left the castle to the Church of Ireland, which passed the castle into to Irish state ownership.
The Castle was de-roofed in the 1950s and fell into ruin.
